Part-Time Librarian Pool, Chabot College

The Position

The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is seeking a pool of part-time librarians at Chabot College in Hayward, CA. The position reports to the Division Dean.

Deadline: Open until Filled.

Salary

The hourly salary is $ 49.24 at Step One.

Assignment

The position is part-time librarian. Employment will begin as soon as possible. Hours can include evenings, Fridays or Saturdays.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Master's Degree in Library Science

Demonstrate sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and/or learning disabilities.

Desirable Qualifications

• Experience providing instruction in an academic library;
• Familiarity with information competency/literacy concepts and programs;
• Awareness of various learning styles and teaching strategies;
• Enthusiastic approach to working collaboratively with students, faculty and staff including those who have not had an opportunity to use new technologies;
• Willingness to facilitate student’s learning by working to develop varied and innovative learning environments;
• Experience with HTML, multimedia and presentation software;
• Experience with Libguides and various electronic databases;
• Excellent interpersonal and team collaboration skills;
• Interest in promoting library services to a multicultural population;
• Experience teaching classes utilizing effective search strategies to access resource;

Particular Job Characteristics

• Teach effective research strategies in print and online resources;
• Provide reference services in a multimedia environment to students, staff and faculty;
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;

Candidates invited to interview may be asked for additional information and may be required to present a brief teaching demonstration on an assigned topic.

Criticism on Great Works of Literature--Online!

Who ever thought criticism begins online?! It now does at Chabot!

The Library is always looking to improve its online presence with full text resources, and this year with respect to English 4, the popular course of the Writing and Critical Thinking requirement for General Education, we have purchased a great number of E-Books so that everyone now has unlimited simultaneous access to more books devoted to literary criticism.

These are in addition to our main database of literary criticism, Literature Resource Center and journals in Academic Search Elite.

Through Literature Criticism Online, Short Story Criticism presents critical views on the most widely studied writers of short fiction. Each volume includes overviews of three to six short story writers, works, or topics and a historical survey of the critical response. The Library has gotten all 150 volumes online and will be getting all future volumes in this format.

The Library has also purchased around 900 books in Gale Virtual Reference Library devoted to literary figures and literary criticism, including the entire Twayne series, spanning 860 E-books devoted to individual authors and works.

The Library has purchased over 40 additional E-books on literary criticism devoted to individual authors and texts in the ABC-CLIO ebook collection.

For the above, all individual texts are also in the Library Catalog. So students can find both our print and online texts of criticisms devoted to individual literary authors!

Finally, for students that want to find full-text poems and short stories on particular subjects or by authors, LitFinder provides it easily, including some works with copyright permission to appear here. It also provides indexing information to print materials.

Chabot Library Celebrates Black History Month

STOP by the library and check-out our current book display, “In Motion: The Great Black Migration,” in celebration of Black History Month. Learn about the African-American migration experience through the voices of extraordinary men and women who endured a culture of slavery and oppression in this country. While researching this month’s display, I came across powerful texts and authors, like the work of Dr. Carole Marks, who along with eleven other scholars contributed to In Motion: the African-American Migration Experience (http://www.inmotionaame.org/home.cfm), an excellent online resource on this subject.

Her essay, “The Great Migration: African-Americans Searching for the Promised Land, 1916-1930,” is available in its entirety at this web site. In her essay she writes, “the Great Migration was about migrants starting over and making sacrifices for future generations whom they would probably never see. As W.E.B. DuBois concluded, the journey North represented not the end of a struggle but only its beginning.”

Over Two Thousand New E-Books at Chabot Library!

The Library is proud to announce that our E-Books collection has grown tremendously. With our purchase with most other community colleges across the state, we now have over 2,000 books that can be accessed through NetLibrary.

Meet Anita Amirrezvani, Author of The Blood of Flowers

Anita Amirrezvani was born in Tehran, Iran, and lives in Northern California. For ten years, she was a staff dance critic for newspapers in the San Francisco Bay Area. She has received fellowships from the National Arts Journalism Program, the NEA's Arts Journalism Institute for Dance, and the Hedgebrook Foundation for Women Writers.

The Library Celebrates LGBT History Month

The Library is proud to celebrate LGBT History Month. For the month of October, take a look from the Library's Contemporary Reading Shelves to read about the rich LGBT History and Culture in the United States. Featured topics include same sex marriage, coming out stories, gays and lesbians in the military, civil rights struggles throughout the years, and providing support to LGBT teenagers. Featured figures and authors include Harvey Milk, Audrey Lorde, James Baldwin, Billie Jean King, David Hwang, Alice Walker, and more!

In addition, the Library contains a display case in honor of National Coming Out Day, which will take place on Monday, October 11, 2010. The Library also supports causes such as prevention of teen suicide and anti-gay bullying (such as the Trevor Project) and reminds everyone in honor of six gay men who tragically took their own lives recently to wear purple on Wednesday, October 20, 2010.

However, while this is a month of awareness it is also a month of celebration to our LGBT youth and the historical figures who have and continue to touch our lives, impact our culture, and contribute to society in their service.

What's Going On With the Databases?!

As I'm sure you notice sometimes when you log onto Facebook, let alone even on Google, sometimes the interface in front of you has changed, and sometimes even the NAMES of the databases have changed. These days, these changes seem to happen overnight that even us librarians are not prepared!

Given that, here are the updates of what's going on with our databases since January of this year:

1. Project MUSE is no longer a subscription database at Chabot due to budget cuts.

2. In the Spring, with small monies, we were able to get the Arts and Sciences II version of JSTOR. It is a TINIER and more SUBJECT LIMITED version of MUSE, let alone all of JSTOR as well as more of a NON-CURRENT database (there is an embargo of five years on most titles, meaning the newest issue will most often be at least five years old). This database focuses primarily in the fields of Political Science, Anthropology, Family Studies, Classical Studies, and History. For more information, look at the title list.

3. The Library began purchasing/owning E-books which are accessed through the new Gale Virtual Reference Library platform.

4. EBSCOhost has changed its interface. When you use our tutorials on EBSCOhost, some information is now out of date, but not so radically different. It's mainly the search results page where all information to limit your search, whether it be to peer-reviewed or by subject, will now all be on the LEFT side.

5. JSTOR has changed its interface. You need to UN-CHECK the lower selection that says "Include Links to External Content" as most of that content is currently NOT free.

6. Pop Culture Universe has been bought by another company and we now have two database products. At present, the one with more detail is the E-Books database called Pop Culture E-Books. The new Pop Culture Universe should mainly be used for quick reference check-ups, news, or decades information.

7. The Gale vendor is currently in the process of replacing its "Resource Center" products with the new "In Context" products. Biography Resource Center is now Biography In Context with a brand new interface. We expect Literature Resource Center to eventually have the name change and similar interface changes as well, but we do not know when.

8. LexisNexis Academic's new interface is now the official interface. To learn more on how to use it, check out the YouTube instructional tutorials.

The Library Celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

This past summer I came across a very cool book, Lengua Fresca (on order), which opened the door to an eclectic mix of contemporary Latino/a authors. Their writings prompted the idea of creating a book display in celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15). The display, located near the library’s periodicals, directly across from the Reference & Circulation Desk, includes titles by Junot Diaz, Ana Menendez, Dagoberto Gilb, Cristina Garcia to name a few. These emerging voices are an attempt to showcase a new aesthetic of Latino/a life in the United States. And yes, it’s okay to check them out!

NEW this year, a suggestion box (on top of one of the display cases) to collect your impressions of the current book display as well as to gather title suggestions and ideas for future exhibits—your participation will be appreciated.

Also NEW this year, in partnership with Angie Magallon’s ENGL 22 (Mex Amer/Latino Lit of U.S.), the library will be displaying some of her students’ work later this month in an effort to bring additional context to this month’s celebration!

New Password to Get into Databases and Look Upo Your Record

As of June 3, 2010 there is now a new way to get into our databases and to look up your record (to renew books, etc.) in the Library Catalog.

When logging into databases off campus there is now a new password.

The username is still your W ID number and it must begin with a capital W. If you do not know your W ID number, look up your record on Class-Web: https://bw6.clpccd.cc.ca.us/pls/OWA_PROD/twbkwbis.P_WWWLogin

After logging in, the first item listed will be what is my W ID?

The password is the following:

The first TWO letters of your first name, the first TWO letters of your last name, and the LAST FOUR DIGITS of your W ID number.

For example, if your name is Jane Chabot and your W ID number is W98765432

It would be this:

Username: W98765432
Password: jach5432

To look at your patron record in the Library Catalog go to:

Where it says PIN be sure to type in the password as listed above.

While the password is the same as the default password to Blackboard, it is NOT the same password as getting into Class-Web or The Zone.

E-Books at Chabot College Library

Since last year, Chabot College Library has begun getting subscriptions and purchasing databases and platforms that provide E-Books. Here is an introduction to three products that are available to you:

Pop Culture Universe searches reference books, encyclopedias, biographies, and collections of essays on various aspects of popular culture from around the world, from the early twentieth century to the present. Provided by renowned publishers such as Greenwood and Praeger, this collection, written by scholars of many different fields, demonstrate a quality that Wikipedia can never compare. Whether it is research on film studies, cultural anthropology, the youth culture, trends in art or music, or biographies of well-known figures of the day, this is an excellent resource. The total of the collection amounts to around 370 titles with over 400 volumes, and includes over 5,500 book chapters AND over 19,000 detailed encyclopedia entries.

Gale Virtual Reference Library is a platform for you to access many different reference E-books. The Library has purchased so far 71 different titles, totaling to more than 200 volumes which includes research in the Social Sciences, the Sciences, Literature, Business, Law, Careers, and Education. Also contains analyses and statistics of the hot topics of the day.

Salem Literature and Salem Health are different platforms which contain titles that the Library has purchased in print, of which the Library is also given free online access. Salem Literature contains book-length critical analyses of individual authors such as Toni Morrison or individual works such as I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. Salem Health contains encyclopedias on various aspects of human health.

Where do I find them? All products are available on our Databases page where you click on Magazines, Journal Articles and Newspapers. You can also find them at our developing E-Books page (currently in progress).

Francisco Jiménez emigrated with his family to California from Tlaquepaque, Mexico, and as a child he worked in the fields of California. He is currently the Fay Boyle Professor in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Santa Clara University.

The exhibits showcase the life and work of Howard Zinn (1922-2010), J. D. Salinger (1919-2010), and Luis Leal (1907-2010). Our goal is to bring this dialog to the student and inspire them to conduct library research related to each installation!

Library Reserves

This is just a reminder to all of you that we will place any of your teaching materials on reserve here in the library. However, we don't purchase textbooks for this purpose. You need to provide us with one of your extra desk copies.

We've had several students in the library recently asking for their textbooks that some of you may have said to them that we would have in the library. We don't! You are our only source for these books.

Please pass the word on to your part-time colleagues that may not receive this email.

Just stop in the library and ask for the form Chabot College Reserve Book Request at the Circulation desk. They will be placed on reserve in your name and class.

The Chabot College Librarians offer orientation sessions during each semester, including the summer, covering basic library and research skills. We customize each orientation based on the given assignment.

Whether your students are required to write a report, a critical essay, or a research paper, the librarians will show them how and where to begin. We will make sure they don’t get lost in the overwhelming sea of information. They will learn about:

· Finding Articles Using Periodical Indexes

· Research Strategies and Techniques
· Selection and Evaluation of Sources

New services include our Online Chat Reference. Now on the Library home pag e and at the times indicated, you can get real time online reference from one of our librarians. Look at the third column and type in your question at the bottom of the box!

Searchpath 1.2 and Lots of Other Tutorials

The Library is proud to announce Searchpath 1.2, the new version of a six module tutorial that will teach you how to use both print and online resources effectively. Each module lasts from 15 to 45 minutes long, depending on the lesson.

In addition, we now have many new tutorials that will teach you how to log into databases from off campus, search the Library Catalog and EBSCOhost, effective tips on Emailing and printing articles from databases, and further tips on how you can become a savvy researcher on EBSCOhost. Please take a look at our tutorials, and then if you have any questions, as always, contact a librarian.

Where is Project MUSE?

As you know, all state funded institutions in California have been suffering by budget cuts. While the Library believes you should have as many resources online as possible, we did not have the funds to renew this important database for the 2010. This means for the Spring semester full text articles for Project MUSE are not available. As Project MUSE was a unique subscription as we had what was called "perpetual access," once the DVD-ROMs are available around June, we will have copies of all articles up to 2009 from our past database subscription in that format (a librarian would then retrieve an article for you). Unfortunately, we will not receive these DVD-ROMs until likely June.

If your instructor asks you to use Project MUSE, search in one of our other many current database subscriptions instead. They are available at: http://www.chabotcollege.edu/Library/abby/dblist.html

EBSCOhost Academic Search Elite has articles similar to what you would find in Project MUSE and for literary criticism, use Literature Resource Center.

If you still need to use Project MUSE, the CSU East Bay Library currently subscribes to it. You will need to be on the CSU East Bay campus, itself, to use it, however.

LGBT History Month @ the Library

Starting this week, the Library will be featuring in its Contemporary Reading Shelves, National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) History month, which is celebrated every October in the United States. We feature books that tell the history and biographies of key individuals, including those who have fought for LGBT rights to the present. The Contemporary Reading Shelves are located behind the main desk of the Library. Walk behind the desk to scope the shelves of books to browse and check-out! We also have a smaller display across from the Reference Desk next to the print station. Below are some additional resources.

Currently the Contemporary Reading Shelves have a great selection of books and audio-visual materials celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. You can browse the collection online by going to our virtual bookshelf. Pick out a title you like and come check it out at the library.

We also have 2 new librarians at Chabot. Welcome to Pedro Reynoso, the new Outreach and Instruction Librarian. We also welcome Julian Prentice, who is here temporarily as the Information Literacy and Technology Librarian. Both librarians can be found in office 117, at the reference desk, or in a classroom orientation.

What's Happened with the Library Catalog?!

Chabot Library is still using the same catalog but now adopting a more user friendly look. In the coming months, the Library Catalog will slowly transform so that you can find the books that you need more swiftly and easily.

For now, all the features of the catalog, how to look up books, find the call number, find subject headings, and request books from Las Positas are the same as before. To learn more take Module 3 of the Searchpath Tutorial. While the screen captures may look a bit different, you are for now, still doing the same things!

Cuba: What Now, What’s Next?

The U. S. and Cuba have waged a “cold war of the Caribbean” for nearly half a century. But a change to this political and economic stalemate seems imminent.

Please join several Chabot faculty and other recent travelers to Fidel Castro’s island for a “Report on Cuba” in the Chabot Library, Room 107 A and B, Wednesday May 6 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Chabot historian Rick Moniz has led 18 trips to Castro’s tropic of socialism, most recently over this semester’s Spring Break.

Moniz and members of the Spring Break delegation will discuss their experiences, reflect on recent political developments and share their stories and photos.

All Chabot faculty, staff and students are invited to attend and take part in a Q & A.

Update On Our Trial Databases

We at the Library are hoping that you are enjoying our current database trials. To view them, go to: http://www.chabotcollege.edu/Library/abby/TrialDatabases .htm

As of today, we have a brand new trial to JSTOR. JSTOR is a scholarly journals database that contains archives of famed journals, sometimes going all the way back to the early twentieth century. It works only on campus and it will be running until May 15. We will not be able to get any subscriptions to it in the near future, but if we ever do, we would only be getting a portion of the current trial.

In the meantime, we have finished our databases budget for the following academic year and we will be subscribing to the following starting on July 1, 2009. Two of which we hope to have for a long time to come and one we will have for sure until June 30, 2010.

Pop Culture Universe
We received an overwhelming positive response to this product and we know it will be used. This database searches full-text reference and other books on American and World Popular Culture from the 1900's to the present. Our current trial runs until June 1.

CQ Researcher
While we have had an online subscription to Facts on File Issues and Controversies since 2001, we have gotten frequent requests to ALSO have CQ Researcher online.
And we've listened. Now, students will be able to get the premium in-depth research done weekly of the topics of the day. The well-detailed reports are studied also by newspaper and magazine editors and reporters from across the country as well as Congressional staffers. The Library is proud to say that this great resource that we've always had in our Reference room in print, will now be available online to students who can access them from their homes. Now, all our online courses have access to this well valued resource! The current trial runs until April 25.

Biography Resource Center
For a number of years, the Library has been evaluating and considering a biographies resource, and Gale's Biography Resource Center is definitely one of the best online resources currently available. We will definitely be having a subscription on this last product from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010, due to a unique offer we received from the vendor. After that date, as this is an expensive product, we will be anxious to hear from you as to your thoughts about the product and if you believe it will be in heavy enough use to justify its cost. Current trial runs until May 8.

The Library Features Disability Awareness

In April, the Library features its Contemporary Reading Shelves (right behind the main desk) with its promotion of books that features an array of books on diversity awareness. From physical to learning, from disabilities at birth to accidents or from combat--these books focus on the individuals who live day to day with their disabilities, and often finding resilience in excelling in their lives.

The Library Celebrates Native American Heritage Month

The Library celebrates the rich heritage of the many different peoples who have originally lived in what we now call the United States. Originally misnamed "Indians," the Native Americans encompass many different tribes with their own rich histories.

Take a look at the Contemporary Reading shelves to learn more about many rich traditions and cultures. Also included are contemporary authors Sherman Alexie, Louise Erdrich, Linda Hogan, N. Scott Momaday, and Leslie Silko. Please take a look and read a great book!

The Library Celebrates National LGBT History Month and National Coming Out Day

Starting next week, the Library will be featuring in its Contemporary Reading Shelves, National Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered (LGBT) History month, which is celebrated every October in the United States. We feature books that tell the history and biographies of key individuals, including those who have fought for LGBT rights to the present.

Books by prominent authors such as David Leavitt, Adrienne Rich, Alice Walker, and Tony Kushner will be featured, and available for checkout.

Meanwhile, out of spirit of National Coming Out Day, which occurs on October 11, but the college is honoring it today (October 9) , we have a display already featured on one of the new books shelves, next to the reference desk. Please take a look!

The Contemporary Reading Shelves are located behind the main desk of the Library. Walk behind the desk to scope the shelves of books to browse. If you are looking for a key LGBT book in the collection, and are unable to find one, be sure to also look at these shelves, or ask assistance from our friendly librarians.

A challenge is defined as a formal, written complaint, filed with a library or school, requesting that materials be removed because of content or appropriateness. New Students, Welcome to the Fall Semester!

The Library welcomes you to the Fall semester. We will be open Mondays through Thursdays 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Fridays, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

We welcome you to a wonderful education at Chabot College. If you ever need help in your research, a librarian is available for you, on the left side of the main desk.

The Library provides many resources, both in print and electronic. Print resources can be checked out with your student ID card and you can find them in the Library Catalog. Electronic resources are available to you from the Library Databases page (as well as other pages). Go to How to Get Into Databases Off Campus to learn how to access them from your home.

The Library is also a study area, so please do not have loud conversations and have your cell phones on vibrating. If you receive a call, politely step outside to have your conversation.

Study rooms are available for groups of two or more. The sign up sheet is available at the reference desk. You can sign up to one week in advance.

Your library card is your student ID card. Have your picture taken in the photo ID center, located just above the cafeteria. You will need your Student ID card to check out books, for other on campus needs, let alone some movie houses out there will actually give you a student discount if you show it to them! So keep your student ID card in your wallet.

Books are purchased at the Chabot bookstore, not the Library. The Library has SOME textbooks available on reserve, but only if your instructor(s) have placed them there. They are most often available for only ONE HOUR checkout and are NOT to leave the Library (the time is there for you to make photocopies). The Library has learned that the Chabot Las Positas Community College District is going through a current server emergency upgrade. This means that there will be times that servers will be down and you may not be able to access the College web site, the Library web site, and Chabot Library's subscription databases.

The server down times are currently slated for the following:

Library Services Specialist (#2CLR17)

The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is seeking a Library Services Specialist for Chabot College in Hayward. Under direction, the specialist assumes responsibility for assisting in managing the operations and budget of the Library and performs a variety of specialized technical and complex tasks of varying degrees of difficulty and responsibility in support of various Library functions and service areas (s). The position reports directly to the Dean, Language Arts.

Assignment/Salary

The position is full-time, Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., 12 mo/yr. Employment will begin on or about September 16, 2008. The salary is $4,938.33/mo. (Range 45, Funding: 100% District).

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Equivalent to completion of high school with additional education in library science or a related field AND five years of responsible technical library experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience that indicates possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully accomplish the work.

Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and/or learning disabilities.

Knowledge of: Library systems, terminology, procedures, equipment, products, and services; budgeting principles and practices; purchasing principles and practices; principles of staff supervision, training and evaluation; record keeping and report preparation principles and practices; proper English usage, grammar, spelling, and vocabulary; modern office methods, procedures, practices, and equipment including personal computers and related software including office applications, accounting/financial systems, and Library automation software; interpersonal relationship skills using tact, patience, courtesy, and diplomacy; standard operating practices associated with the assigned work area(s).

Assist in managing the operations and budgets of the Library; assist in analyzing all Library operations and providing recommendations for improvement; participate in the development and implementation of Library policies and procedures; assist in notification and implementation of policies and procedures from the District office;
In the absence of the Library Coordinator, manage the day-to-day operations of the Library; oversee classified staff and serve as a resource to other classified staff to resolve operational issues; serve as a liaison to management staff to resolve major issues; maintain schedule of Library personnel;

Oversee the selection and ordering of supplies used in the library;
Reconcile materials received with invoicing; resolve discrepancies;

Maintain a variety of records and files; prepare necessary correspondence and reports including those requested by county, state, and federal agencies;
Support overall library operations and services through projects and other duties as appropriate and assigned;
Attend professional development courses as appropriate; and

Summer Library Orientations

Just a reminder that the Chabot College Librarians offer orientation sessions during each semester, including the summer, covering basic library and research skills. We customize each orientation based on the given assignment.

Whether your students are required to write a report, a critical essay, or a research paper, the librarians will show them how and where to begin. We will make sure they don’t get lost in the overwhelming sea of information.

Reminder of Hours and Returns:

As you are planning to study for Finals, remember that the Library's Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays and 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Fridays. We are closed during the weekends.

Three study rooms are available for groups of two or more. You can sign up to one week in advance, at the Reference Desk. (At least two names MUST be signed up). Maximum of two hours per day. Be sure to sign up rather than assume a room, as you will be asked to leave if a signed-up study group arrives. If a signed-up study group does not show up after 10 minutes of the time signed, the room is considered forfeited to any other study group who may want to use it at this time.

Please have your cell phone conversations outside. Believe it or not, people studying near you do not want to hear your conversation. Keep phones at vibrating (no sound) and text message them and let them know you'll talk to them in a moment, as you kindly step outside.

Please remember, that regardless when you check out a book, all books must returned by May 30. The Library will be closed from May 31 until June 15 (until summer session begins).
If you need to return a book (and pay a fine) after May 30, keep in mind that during the day you can enter just to pay your fine. There will be people staffed here on Mondays through Thursdays of the first two weeks of June.

Chabot Library is proud to announce a new feature where you can find full-text articles with more ease than before! With our new service provided by Serials Solutions, called 360 Link (also known as "Article Linker"), you will now be directed to articles in other databases and the free Public World Wide Web.

Here is how it works:

1. You come across an article you want that is NOT in the current database. In Ebscohost, you would click on “Check to see if Full Text is in Chabot’s Other Databases”

2. If the article is available in another database, you godirectly to that article. No further searching, no need to navigate back to a databases page. The link goes directly to the article!

3. If the article is not available, you are then led to options that include finding the title in print at a local library!

In addition to being able to link to articles between databases, you can also link to articles from Chabot full-text databases right from Google Scholar! To set up Chabot Library directly in Google Scholar preferences, go to http://tinyurl.com/3v74pa Click on the "Save Preferences" button. When you perform a search in Google Scholar, on the right of some of your Google scholar entries there will be a link that says "Chabot Library Databases". Click on that link, and in most cases, you will go directly to the article (if you are off-campus, enter your username and password, then be led directly to the article!)

In May, The Library Features Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

May is the month to honor Asian and Pacific Islander American heritage. Our Contemporary reading shelves feature books by or about such great authors, artists and figures such as Ang Lee, Amy Tan, Joan Chen, David Hwang, Aimee Phan, Jessica Hagedorn, Denise Chong, Isamu Noguchi, Haruki Marukami* and more. Books on history include topics such as Asian Americans in the United States and in California, Angel Island, Japanese Internment in World War II, and Hawaiian sovereignty.

The Library welcomes everyone to a new semester. As you start getting your library research assignments, please remember that librarians are available to help you at the reference desk. We are always happy to teach you how to use the databases, the Library Catalog, how to search the Web effectively, and other methods to research.

Meanwhile, we have new announcements:

1. The Library's hours have changed this semester. Please make it a point to plan your visits to the Library, the Student Computer Lab, and WRAC Center with these new hours in mind.

2. The Library is proud to announce we have two new staff members: Thomas Hugel is our Audio-Visual library tech person and Lia Thomas is a new adjunct (part-time) librarian.

3. As promised last summer, the new Literature Resource Center interface is now live. We hope that the new interface will be an improvement to those of you who are seeking for literary criticisms or biographical information on authors. If you have questions about the new interface, please come to the reference desk and a librarian will show you how to use it.

4. The Student Computer Lab has updated and gotten more software! The computers now have both Microsoft Office 2003 and 2007, and other updated programs. Look at the Student Computer Lab page for more information. As a reminder, you no longer need to show and leave your Student ID card to use the Lab. Just sit at an available computer, and type in your User ID number.

5. Searchpath: The new Library Online Tutorial--some of you taking certain Distance Education courses may already be using it for your classes, but the Library is proud to announce the launching of its new online, interactive tutorial: Searchpath. This tutorial includes lessons on the types of resources, how to plan your research, how to find books in the Library Catalog, and articles in the Library subscription databases, how to search and effectively evaluate information found on the Web, and how to cite resources responsibly. We encourage you to use the tutorial, and if you have any questions about it, please see us at the reference desk!

REMINDERS: Wireless access is available in the Library. There is no username/password to get access. Just turn on your wireless ready laptop and go online. We do ask that you refrain from playing any games or movies, however as high use bandwidth does effect the entire wireless network.

Coming up there are two very important activities where instead of chatting with your friends on Facebook or MySpace, you may want to head down to the Cesar Chavez Court at noon on Thursday, December 13 or to the Hayward City Chambers on Monday or Tuesday, December 17 and 18 and make your voice heard.

What's happening at the Cesar Chavez Court on Thursday?

There will be a rally to provide information and support for Proposition 92, the Community Colleges initiative. Do you want more stable funding for your college? Would you like a lower cost per unit with firmer controls that keep the legislature from raising your tuition rates? Proposition 92 will do those things. Some of your friends who were students in 2003-2004 can tell you how their tuition rates more than doubled due to two cost increases within a one year period! Your tuition will drop to $15 a unit and the California budget will provide firm guarantees of funding each year JUST for community colleges. If you support those ideas and want to help, be sure to attend the rally on Thursday.

What is going on with the Power Plants? How come we as residents, students, and workers of this area in Hayward were not informed? To get up to speed as to what this is about, be sure to read the sites on our Power Plants in Hayward page. The construction of two Power Plants near Chabot will have an effect on our environment and could have effects in the long term on people's health. There will be two hearings at the Hayward City Chambers on Monday, December 18 and Tuesday, December 19 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2:30-5:00 p.m. There is also an online petition regarding the Power Plants (Note: the energy produced from both Power Plants will go to the Peninsula and not to the East Bay). If you are against the construction of the Power Plants, let your voice be heard. The ASCC (Associated Students of Chabot College) have a petition online. Sign it to have your voice be heard.

Finally, for everyone who cares about their education and their health, please remember to vote. The next election is already LESS than two months away. It will be the Presidential Primaries and if you participate you will already be giving your voice as to who you want to be President next year. Registration forms are available online (though you will still have a filled out form mailed to you so that the State can receive your signature. The deadline to register is January 22, 2008. We will have a new President starting in January, 2009. Study up on the candidates and make your selection. To find what will be on your vote go to smartvoter.org

Don't Let Someone Phish For your Virtual Wallet!

So you get an Email claiming to be from Ebay saying that someone is trying to fraudulently use your account and that you need to click on a link to an online form and reput your information.

Watch out! The fraud may be coming from the Email itself, where you will go to a phony online form that is NOT from Ebay and you will be entering personal, sensitive information such as Social Security Numbers, Credit Card numbers, or checking account numbers. Once those are submitted, someone then has your information and you could be a victim of identity theft!

This act is called "Phishing"--which means "a scam by which an e-mail user is duped into revealing personal or confidential information which the scammer can use illicitly" (Meriam-Webster Online Dictionary).

How can you protect yourself?

First of all--ask if email is an appropriate place to solicit funds? Government entities like the IRS cannot legally contact you by Email. Companies like Ebay and AOL have certain procedures on how to handle fraud that will not arrive to you as a normal Email. Charities usually use regular paper mail. In general, in most cases, you will be notified by other means than Email such as secure mail or a phone line.

Second of all--PAY ATTENTION to the URL of the form! Even if the email you receive may tell you to go to www.ebay.com, take your mouse on that link and look at the URL listed below your browser to see if it really takes you to the site it claims. Most often the forms will have a completely different web address.

When and if you do receive such a Email, forward it to your Internet Service Provider (AOL, Comcast, etc.) Notifying them about such Emails will allow the companies to add the author to their Spam filter, as well as forward it to appropriate police or other security entities.

In general, if you receive Emails such as these, treat them as Spam. Delete them immediately. If there are issues related to your account, etc. the company will contact you by other means.

Sometimes the documents we are working at from home may be too new or too different from the programs operating on campus. We may mean well to save files properly to the right format (such as Office 2003) but we forget. And now here we are on campus, and we want to work on and later print our finished homework assignments. What do we do?

As mentioned before last summer, we are now in a Web 2.0 environment. You need to convert a file so it will work with a computer on campus? Go to a site to do it for free!

And don't feel at loss when you're using public computers such as those on campus where you can't download converters. At http://zamzar.com you can quickly convert your files within minutes and then get back to working on your assignments.

Before You Reach for Your Credit Card . . .

Textbooks, Cheap--Where?!!!

And you may have come to the Library, hoping the textbook is there for you to check out the whole semester?

Well, it doesn't work that way. First of all, your instructor has to put the textbook on Reserve. If they do not do so, we do not have it. The Library does not purchase textbooks on its own--we do not have an annual budget to buy them as is. Second of all, when the textbook is on Reserve, you're asking for a checkout time of 1 hour, most often, because as you can imagine, many students may need it as well. With 1 hour, you will most often need to photocopy many pages, at 10 cents per page, and that adds up.

So most often, you WILL have to purchase your own textbooks.

But maybe you can find them at a cheaper price?

For those of you who are new to Chabot, we give a special welcome! From our website to the Library, which is on the second floor of Building 100, we provide all sorts of information resources that can be beneficial for your research. Want to learn how to use library subscription databases to find quality articles, or how to find a book, or find a movie or documentary, or find quality web sites that are much more reliable than Wikipedia? Or if you want to say hi . . .

We have bunches of friendly faces up here. A lot of us are at the main desk of the Library (right in front). So please stop by. Librarians are faculty members who will provide you instruction on how to be able to find materials, and in the process, become better students.

So if you do have any questions, do not hestitate to ask. Librarians are available on the left side of the reference desk.

1. Type in the box search terms. Do NOT type in the box as if you are filling a form.

2. When using phrases surround them with quotation marks such as "Chabot college"

3. When looking at your search results, pay attention to the menu on the left--use the pull-down menu to narrow your results.

The new interface to Lexis-Nexis Academic should appear on July 9 or shortly thereafter. The new interface to Literature Resource Center is slated to appear by late August. Technology Is Fine, But What About Books for the Summer?

Ah yes. Nothing to enrich the mind as reading a good, literary novel. In fact, just behind the main desk are shelves of suggested works of fiction you just may enjoy. Granted, we're closed until June 11-- but do take a look when we're open again.

In the meantime--want a sample of especially what are the "greats"? Well, everyone has an opinion--but renowned literary critic Larry McCaffery, happens to have a list that he calls The 20th Century Greatest Hits: 100 English- Language Books of Fiction. The Computer Lab and the WRAC Center: The Transition Begins

If you are wondering what is going on at the mezzanine--the computer lab is still open--it is now available in the center of the mezzanine near the Audio Visual Center. If you see signs that say closed off, the Computer Lab is not closed--It is open today from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. , tomorrow 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., and it will be there open during regular Library hours, as always (June 11 to August 2-- 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.).

The WRAC Center will move to the Mezzanine of the Library in the coming weeks as the College begins its major renovations as provided by the Facilities Bond that was passed back in 2004. It will be situated on the left side--the computer Lab will be in the center--and the Audio Visual Center will continue to provide services to the right.

Whenever we are open, there will still be computers available on the mezzanine for writing, spreadsheets, Blackboard course work, web browsing, Email, online communities--this will not change. The ten computers around the reference desk will also continue to be available for library research purposes, with a librarian near by who can assist you in finding relevant, quality information from our databases and the Web (and do not forget our own Google Search Engine--it's there on the right menu of this blog. If you do not see it, hit reload. It will show up!)

Please let us know if you have any questions. During this period of transition, keep in mind that for you as a student, you will be able to get assistance on how to improve writing your papers from the staff of the WRAC Center, and just downstairs you can get assistance on how to improve your research for those same papers and projects, from a librarian. Not too bad, huh?

Hungry to Resize That Image? Go on a Picnik!

At the reference desk, we often get a question from one of you who have found that perfect image for your project--but want to resize it. And often, many computers on campus do not have a photo editor like Photoshop. Well, where have you been? It's a Web 2.0 universe now and you should expect to find a site you just go in and visit, register if you want to save your work, to do what you want-- right?

Well, there is a new site--currently in beta mode but in this site you are able to do simple photo and image editing functions. It's called Picnik. Go to http://www.picnik.com/app, upload the image you have found--and you can rotate, crop, resize, modify colors, sharpen, reduce red eye-- in other words, be able to do what you most often want to do with your photos and images. You can set up an account to save your photos and images and variations as well. And there's a tab where you can easily get your photos that you have saved on Flickr.

The Library would like to remind you--however, to keep in mind copyright restrictions when planning to use images. They're fine for projects you present for class--but for websites, if they're not clipart, check for permissions and ask the site owner from where you got it.

We Now Have a Browsing Magazines Section

Did you know that Chabot Library now has a browsing magazines section? The most recent issue of select magazines are now available in the center of the Library, on a rack, right in front of our Pamphlet cabinets. They are to be enjoyed the same as a reference book, in-house only.

As always, print journals and older magazines are available for a 7 day checkout period. Come to the right side of the main desk (the Check Out) side to look at and/or check out the issue you need.

Welcome to the Chabot Library Read!

Good weekend! This is the first posting of the blog of the Chabot College Library.

We have big news coming up with changes to our web site!

The databases page will soon have a new look! We are splitting up our long list of databases to different pages so that you can select and choose your database quicker. To get a preview go to the New Databases Web Page

Also new, the Library now has a quality Google search engine to public world wide web sites selected by Chabot Librarians. When you have finished searching for books and articles, search the new search engine to find quality information on the public World Wide Web. Clicking on journals will lead you to free, peer-reviewed articles. To get to the search engine, start at the home page and click on Online Search Engines . The search engine is there on the top right. Enter your search terms and click on "Search."

Two databases will soon have new looks that may begin appearing over the summer. Tutorials on the new Lexis-Nexis are already available. Click on the menu on the top right to engage in three tutorials on how to use the future product. Get a feel for the new search enhancements! Later in the summer, there will also be a new look for Literature Resource Center. When available, we will announce when both have the new looks!

Stay tuned for more changes and improvements including more online tutorials on how to use the Library and search particular databases.
