Update On Our Trial Databases

We at the Library are hoping that you are enjoying our current database trials. To view them, go to: http://www.chabotcollege.edu/Library/abby/TrialDatabases.htm

As of today, we have a brand new trial to JSTOR. JSTOR is a scholarly journals database that contains archives of famed journals, sometimes going all the way back to the early twentieth century. It works only on campus and it will be running until May 15. We will not be able to get any subscriptions to it in the near future, but if we ever do, we would only be getting a portion of the current trial.

In the meantime, we have finished our databases budget for the following academic year and we will be subscribing to the following starting on July 1, 2009. Two of which we hope to have for a long time to come and one we will have for sure until June 30, 2010.

Pop Culture Universe
We received an overwhelming positive response to this product and we know it will be used. This database searches full-text reference and other books on American and World Popular Culture from the 1900's to the present. Our current trial runs until June 1.

CQ Researcher
While we have had an online subscription to Facts on File Issues and Controversies since 2001, we have gotten frequent requests to ALSO have CQ Researcher online.
And we've listened. Now, students will be able to get the premium in-depth research done weekly of the topics of the day. The well-detailed reports are studied also by newspaper and magazine editors and reporters from across the country as well as Congressional staffers. The Library is proud to say that this great resource that we've always had in our Reference room in print, will now be available online to students who can access them from their homes. Now, all our online courses have access to this well valued resource! The current trial runs until April 25.

Biography Resource Center
For a number of years, the Library has been evaluating and considering a biographies resource, and Gale's Biography Resource Center is definitely one of the best online resources currently available. We will definitely be having a subscription on this last product from July 1, 2009 to June 30, 2010, due to a unique offer we received from the vendor. After that date, as this is an expensive product, we will be anxious to hear from you as to your thoughts about the product and if you believe it will be in heavy enough use to justify its cost. Current trial runs until May 8.

Chabot Library Now Has a Widget for ProQuest Diversity Databases!

Our database vendors are slowly but surely coming up with widgets with search boxes, and ProQuest is the first to provide you the ability to search off campus through our proxy server:

Bobby Seale Speaking Today at the Library at Noon!

The Associated Students of Chabot College in cooperation with the Black Student Union would like to invite faculty, staff, and administrators to come hear Bobby Seale, co-founder of the Black Panthers, Civil Rights Activist and Revolutionary speak about "African-American community Unity and Constitutional Democratic Civil-Humans Rights for All Citizens And All Earth's Humanity" in the Library, April 15th, 2009 at 12:00 pm. The Library Features Disability Awareness

In April, the Library features its Contemporary Reading Shelves (right behind the main desk) with its promotion of books that features an array of books on diversity awareness. From physical to learning, from disabilities at birth to accidents or from combat--these books focus on the individuals who live day to day with their disabilities, and often finding resilience in excelling in their lives.

Books feature individuals such as Stevie Wonder, Evelyn Glennie, Ray Charles, Helen Keller, Andre Dubus, and more!

So be sure to take a look and check out some great books!

The Position

The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is seeking a Librarian for Chabot College in Hayward, CA. The position reports to the Division Dean.

Salary

The initial salary placement range is $56,202 - $80,348/yr, depending on education and experience.

Assignment

The position is full-time, sabbatical leave replacement, Fall 2009 Semester. Employment will begin on August 13, 2009. Work schedule will include one night per week.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: *Master's Degree in Library Science, Library and Information Science, OR **the equivalent.

*Degrees in Progress: To be conferred on or before July 1, 2009 will be considered, provided that the applicant also submits (1) an up-to-date transcript, (2) a photocopy of the degree requirement from the school catalog, and (3) proof of current course(s) and enrollment.

Demonstrate sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and/or learning disabilities.

Desirable Qualifications

• Experience providing instruction in an academic library;
• Familiarity with information competency/literacy concepts and programs;
• Awareness of various learning styles and teaching strategies;
• Enthusiastic approach to working collaboratively with students, faculty and staff including those who have not had an opportunity to use new technologies;
• Willingness to facilitate student’s learning by working to develop varied and innovative learning environments;
• Experience with HTML, multimedia and presentation software;
• Experience teaching classes utilizing effective search strategies to access resource;
• Excellent interpersonal and team collaboration skills;
• Interest in promoting library services to a multicultural population;
• Experience with Blackboard or other web course management software.

Particular Job Characteristics

• Teach effective research strategies in print and online resources;
• Provide reference services in a multimedia environment to students, staff and faculty;
• Act as a library liaison to at least one instructional division and to help develop the library’s collection to support that academic discipline;
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
• Participate in campus and district professional activities; which may include, but are not limited to, committee membership, and staff meetings;
• Be responsible for the development and maintenance of the library’s instructional web pages.

Supplemental Questionnaire

The following essay is intended to seek information regarding your ability to teach Library skills. Please write an essay of up to 250 words that discusses how to implement the concepts of information competency for traditional and non traditional students, both in an online as well as in a campus environment. The Big Read Is Coming!!!

March 2009 begins the month long activities of Hayward's Big Read.

Please mark your calendars for the second teacher's workshop for the Big Read that will take place on Wednesday, February 25 beginning at 4:00 p.m. in Room 107A/B. This will be the workshop to share and/or learn new teaching methods in using Gaines' A Lesson Before Dying. The official email invitation will be coming...but for now, please mark your calendars!

Hello, all. Happy New Year, and welcome to the Spring semester!

Please continue to find Chabot Library's webpage at: http://www.chabotcollege.edu/library or click on the Library link on the new Zone page.

Librarians from both Chabot and Las Positas served on the core Committee and have provided input to making the Zone user friendly to our students. Alas, the single sign-on will not yet work to get you or your students into the library's databases, meaning students logging into the portal will still need to log into databases when they are off-campus as they have in the past. The Library Celebrates Native American Heritage Month

The Library celebrates the rich heritage of the many different peoples who have originally lived in what we now call the United States. Originally misnamed "Indians," the Native Americans encompass many different tribes with their own rich histories.

Take a look at the Contemporary Reading shelves to learn more about many rich traditions and cultures. Also included are contemporary authors Sherman Alexie, Louise Erdrich, Linda Hogan, N. Scott Momaday, and Leslie Silko. Please take a look and read a great book!
