National Poetry Month

In honor of National Poetry Month in April, we will be featuring a collection of poetry-themed books on display after the break. We will feature works by Nikki Giovanni and other contemporary poets. We will also have a visual display up themed around poetry, with a highlight on spring poetry. Have a wonderful Spring Break!

What's on Display This Month

In celebration of Women's History Month in March, we are featuring a display of books about women's history this month. You can check out our selection of books on the shelves across from the circulation desk, as well as on the shelves behind the desk.

We also have a couple of themed displays in the glass case outside the silent study room and in the table display cases near the GoPrint machine. The display case near the silent study room features a display themed around President Obama's Inaugural Speech. The display focuses on certain aspects of the President's speech, like the treatment of immigrants and the protection of our children. The table display cases take a look at the contributions and history of African American women.

Contemporary Reading Shelves: Native American History Month

Swing by the library and browse through our display of books on Native American Heritage and History. We have lots of books on display, including works of fiction by well-known author, Sherman Alexie. We also have new titles in non-fiction, like Thomas Powers' The Killing of Crazy Horse. See you in the library soon!

National Hispanic Heritage Month @ the Library

Come on in and check out our lively display of books for National Hispanic Heritage Month! Our display features works by Hispanic authors and also includes works about, you guessed it, Hispanic heritage and culture! You'll find everything from biographies to novels to poetry. You're sure to find something that will interest you.

While you're at the library, be sure to swing by the display cases near the GoPrint machine to view a variety of Latin Music CDs housed at the Library. Highlights include Salsa, Reggaeton, and Rock en Espanol. If you'd like to check out any of the CDs on display, you can check them out from our AV section, or you can ask a librarian for assistance.

EBSCOhost on Your Smartphone and Pad!

EBSCOhost is now available on your Iphone, Droid, or pad!  Here's how to get it!  On your device go into a Browser and--

1)  Start at the Library Home Page: http://www.chabotcollege.edu/Library

2)  Click on the Articles tab.

3)  Select any EBSCOhost database such as Academic Search Premier

4)  On the bottom of the search screen look for the link that says to download for your Iphone or android.  Click on it. 

5)  It will ask for your Email address.  Enter your Email address and then go into your Email to follow directions.

6)  Click on the first link to download the app.

7)  After you successfully have added the app go back into your Email and select the second link.  It will put into your phone the access code to get into EBSCOhost.

8)  Go back to the EBSCOhost app (you may need to close and open it again)

9)  The app searches all of the EBSCOhost databases.  Be sure you already have a PDF reader on your device as many articles are available only in PDF form.

Finals Time in the Library: Dos

As finals are around the corner, and some of you are already working on your term papers for your courses,  the Library would like to remind you of some Do's when in the Library

1.  Do study in any of our study carrells.  The Library also has a quiet study room with desks and outlets for working on your laptops/pads and studying quietly.

2.  Do eat or drink outside the Library.  The cafeteria has lots of tables and chairs if you want to study and eat indoors (and just a walk across from the Library!).  Sealed bottles of water are acceptable inside the Library but would you want ants crawling in your study space?  We think not! 

3.  For study groups, do sign up for one of our three study rooms or at the reference desk for our study group area behind the reference desk.  Demand for study rooms are high so plan ahead of time.  You can now sign up for the study rooms one week ahead of time at: http://chabotcollege.libcal.com/booking/studyrooms  Study groups are limited to a maximum of 2 hours a day, six hours a week.

4.  Do put your cell phones on vibrating and text as much as you would like.  But for voice conversations, kindly step outside so as not to disturb others.

5.  Do use our leather couches and chairs and group tables to meet as a study group if no study rooms are available, however keep conversations as quiet as possible.   As our days are more sunny than not, you may want to meet outside at our balcony and converse over our cool patio tables.

6.  Do ask the librarian if you need any help finding sources related to your research papers or take home finals.  We are available on the left side of the main desk.  If you are off campus, go to the Library home page and ask for help from our chat box on the top right, whenever the Library is open!

7.  Like anywhere on campus, do keep our library balcony smoke free.  If you feel the need to smoke, you must go to the parking area or anywhere off campus.

The Spring Semester 2012 will be coming to an end soon.  Many improvements have happened in the library
this academic year.  Throughout the library new leather couches and chairs entice students to sit down, relax, study and read.  We have new signage in and around the library.  There is a new "Quiet Study Room" set up for those wishing to plug in a laptop, or just dive into studying in a quiet atmosphere.  There have been upgrades in our Audiovisual area with new dvd/vcr components attached to flat screen T.V's.  We look forward to adding many more items to improve the comfortableness of the library--in semesters to come!

Hours

As the Spring semester continues, you may have noticed continual changes in the Library's hours. This is due to our budget challenges, but as of right now, it looks like the Library will be open:

Mondays through Thursdays 8:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m., Fridays 8:00 a.m. - 12 noon

for the rest of the spring semester (Spring break week-- April 9-13 the exception).

Contemporary Reading Shelves: Women's History Month

Study Groups Can Now Reserve a Room Online!

Study groups can now sign up to a week in advance through our online sign-up. The one signing needs to include their W ID number and two of the group members' Zonemail addresses (if you do not know your Zonemail address, log into Class-Web and click on the "What is my Email address" link). And then needs to confirm by going into their Zonemail (recommended, even if you have Email forwarding in place). Sign up at: http://chabotcollege.libcal.com/booking/studyrooms

The Library has a suite of new databases due to a state-wide purchase for community colleges. Part-Time Librarian Pool, Chabot College

The Position

The Chabot-Las Positas Community College District is seeking a pool of part-time librarians at Chabot College in Hayward, CA. The position reports to the Division Dean.

Salary

The hourly salary is $ 49.24 at Step One.

Assignment

The position is part-time librarian. Employment will begin as soon as possible. Hours can include evenings, Fridays or Saturdays.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: Master's Degree in Library Science

Demonstrate sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical and/or learning disabilities.

Desirable Qualifications

• Experience providing instruction in an academic library;
• Familiarity with information competency/literacy concepts and programs;
• Awareness of various learning styles and teaching strategies;
• Enthusiastic approach to working collaboratively with students, faculty and staff including those who have not had an opportunity to use new technologies;
• Willingness to facilitate student’s learning by working to develop varied and innovative learning environments;
• Experience with HTML, multimedia and presentation software;
• Experience with Libguides and various electronic databases;
• Excellent interpersonal and team collaboration skills;
• Interest in promoting library services to a multicultural population;
• Experience teaching classes utilizing effective search strategies to access resource;


Particular Job Characteristics

• Teach effective research strategies in print and online resources;
• Provide reference services in a multimedia environment to students, staff and faculty;
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;

Criticism on Great Works of Literature--Online!

Who ever thought criticism begins online?! It now does at Chabot!

The Library is always looking to improve its online presence with full text resources, and this year with respect to English 4, the popular course of the Writing and Critical Thinking requirement for General Education, we have purchased a great number of E-Books so that everyone now has unlimited simultaneous access to more books devoted to literary criticism.

These are in addition to our main database of literary criticism, Literature Resource Center and journals in Academic Search Elite.

Through Literature Criticism Online, Short Story Criticism presents critical views on the most widely studied writers of short fiction. Each volume includes overviews of three to six short story writers, works, or topics and a historical survey of the critical response. The Library has gotten all 150 volumes online and will be getting all future volumes in this format.

The Library has also purchased around 900 books in Gale Virtual Reference Library devoted to literary figures and literary criticism, including the entire Twayne series, spanning 860 E-books devoted to individual authors and works.

The Library has purchased over 40 additional E-books on literary criticism devoted to individual authors and texts in the ABC-CLIO ebook collection.

For the above, all individual texts are also in the Library Catalog. So students can find both our print and online texts of criticisms devoted to individual literary authors!

Finally, for students that want to find full-text poems and short stories on particular subjects or by authors, LitFinder provides it easily, including some works with copyright permission to appear here. It also provides indexing information to print materials.
